I must have been mistaken in my belief that the people in Congress were there to represent the will of the residents of America. Oh well.

From a tweet from Representative Culbertson today:”Was New Deal or Medicare or SS written in secret & jammed through the House w 2hr debate, no hearings no amendments? Where is the outrage?” Good question
Much has been written about goals. And if you’re rolling your eyes already, you agree. So I won’t repeat it here and tell you that goals are important, they must be S.M.A.R.T. and all the other true but generally already known stuff about goals.
Instead, I’m going to talk about gols and how a touch of the Ol’ English can bring focus to your life.
Gols
Our modern word goal is derived from the Old English word gol, meaning the dividing walls – stones, shrubs, wood – between farmer’s fields. These gols defined where the farmer labored. And where they didn’t.
Gols weren’t targets, they were boundaries.
If I say think about a soccer field, it’s likely that you envision the bars and nets of goals at the end of a big green space. You may even envision a player kicking a ball through the net to win the game with seconds to spare. Yippee, we won!
Boundaries
But the game couldn’t be played without the sidelines. The players would grow tired or bored or both. In less than fifteen minutes half would be left panting on the ground and the other half would be downing a pint at a pub. Not pretty either way.
But put those same players in an area defined by gols with targets at each end, and you harness focused energy as sure as containing boiling water harnesses the power of steam. The power is built by the boundaries. The target is where it’s released. There’s no power without boundaries.
There’s no power without gols.
Define Your Field
As you write or redefine your goals, imagine the life you want in terms of the soccer field. What will be the area of your activities and what’s the outlet for the release of your energy. A target wrapped in gols defines what you want and how you’ll focus your energies by eliminating the distractions. You must define both if you are to reap the benefits of your energy.
Now, go score.
