Go read this post from Jonathan Morrow, replace all references to writing with music/musician/etc. and take his words to heart – he’s talking to YOU!

Everything he discusses in “5 Crippling Beliefs that keep Writers Penniless and Mired in Mediocrity” is true of musicians too (all artists). So, as I said, go read it.

Money

Though the post covers the topic of money well, if you struggle with the idea that music “can only be a labor of love,” understand that money follows success.

The argument that music shouldn’t be created to make money is only half right. The “right half” is that music created to make money seldom sells and it is rarely artistic.

The wrong half, and the half that catches most musicians, is the perception that IF music makes money, it’s bad. But the opposite is true.

Entertainment

If you want to make your living in music, you have to realize that it is all about entertainment. I don’t just mean “PARTY!” but I do mean connections. Your music MUST connect with people on some emotional level or they will ignore you and your art.

But here’s the thing: when you DO connect, they are going to pay you for that connection. It may or not be a lot, and it may or may not even be money. One way or another though, you will be paid.

And the more you connect, the more you’ll be paid.

Chase Connections

Don’t chase money, it’ll never work. Instead, chase emotionally engaging art that connects with people. They’ll be happy and you’ll be well fed.
